Individual Hunger Diary

Our group has found out many saddening statistics about hunger and who it effects in the United States. About 1 in 6 Americans are suffering due to shortage of food in their lives. Many parents work mutliple jobs to enable their family to have at least one meal a day. Many of the social issues that are going on in our country are intertwined with hunger. An increase in the amount of food stamps recipients and kids recieving meals from school came from the recession in 2006 and the years following. The instability in the pay of jobs and lack of jobs led to an increase in prices of food and an increase in those going without for meals during the day. While many charities are working to make sure that the hungry get atleast one meal a day, we need to work to let our government know the true extent of hunger in the United States. It is necessary that the government spends more money and focus on the hungry and making sure that they also have healthy food to eat, not just the processed cheap food. With help from others, we can make the people of the United States more aware of what is going on and be willing to help make a difference.  With an over abundance of food in our nation, nobody should be forced to go hungry.

Journal Entry 4.26.14

Over these past few months, our group has been researching child hunger. The reality of American hunger eludes many in the land of opportunity and the breadbasket of the world. Therefore, it is hard for us to imagine the extent of those that suffer from food insecurity and hunger.
There is no question about the availability of food and nourishment in the United States. The root of hunger lies in poverty and in so called "food deserts." Food deserts can be urban or rural are areas in which food is difficult to get if you cannot purchase it. Usually, the food available is low quality and very unhealthy.
As an American, it is our duty to take control of what happens in our country. For this reason, we made this blog, to change and improve the condition of those that go without food in this country

"A hungry man can't see right or wrong. He just sees food."- Pearl S. Buck

"We know that a peaceful world cannot long exist, one-third rich and two-thirds hungry."- Jimmy Carter

"The war against hunger is truly mankind's war of liberation."- John F. Kennedy

“The lessons of the nation's past tell us that liberty and justice cannot be secured for ourselves and kept from others without turning sour. Because we have cherished liberty for others, this country has sacrificed enormously (if not always wisely) in lives and material resources. We have not cherished justice as much. But justice and equality are no less a part of the nation's ideals, and we build on them by exercising them in our relationship with others. When we are rich and others are hungry or impoverished beyond description, justice calls for ending this imbalance.” - Art Simon, Founder - Bread for the World
